Teeth Whitening Candidates

December 06, 2009 @ 12:15 AM — by Michele Wallace

One of the great things about cosmetic dentistry is that, with a relatively minimal investment, you can achieve spectacular results. Changing your smile may be as simple as whitening your teeth, and the professional teeth whitening procedure is fast, safe, effective, and affordable.

Candidacy Requirements

While most patients who are concerned about tooth staining are candidates for the teeth whitening treatment, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. Below are the main criteria for good teeth whitening candidates.

Your Primary Concern is Tooth Discoloration – Tooth whitening is strictly for making your smile brighter. If you are looking for a more pronounced change in your smile or the way you look, you may need a different cosmetic dentistry procedure, such as porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.

You Have Realistic Expectations – The success of your tooth whitening procedure depends on a number of factors, including the equipment used, the degree of staining, and the cause of the stain. There is a chance your teeth will not be as white as you expect, and you should remember that the results are not permanent and will fade over time.

You Understand the Potential Risks – Tooth whitening is an exceptionally safe procedure with relatively minimal side effects. However, some patients do experience tooth sensitivity or gum irritation as a result of their treatment. These side effects typically resolve within a few days of treatment.

You Do Not Have Dental Health Problems – Candidates for professional teeth whitening should have healthy teeth and gums that are free from decay or disease. If underlying dental health concerns are present, these conditions will need to be addressed prior to the teeth whitening procedure.
